If Solaris was that necessary,
they wouldn't be giving it away for free or creating the Open-Solaris project around it. Solaris is still a strong and viable OS. They have no need to push Linux on Sparc to make commodity clusters. It's all in the software and implementation. Not to mention Sparc is not a commodity chip to begin with. If that is what your looking for, AMD and Intel have a processor for you, to which you can run almost any OS you want.
