Holographic storage cubes already exist
You may not have heard of them, but InPhase Technologies (www.inphase-technologies.com) has already developed holographic recording technology for digital storage. The discs aren't very thick, but that's more of a form-factor issue -- the device really does record through the entire volume of the media.

Better yet, these are not just prototypes; the company will actually be releasing the first batch of drives later this year (intended mostly for industrial use right now, due to high cost). The drive itself is *huge*, but you have to remember they're first-generation devices. Hopefully their second-generation drives will do away with many of the moving parts by using the micro-mirror technology we're starting to see in laser-based video projectors, making the drives considerably smaller.

So fear not, trekkies! We may be less than a decade away from using isolinear rods for our data storage!
