Maybe its loose terminology...
... and the term "flash" is becoming eponymous for any sort of memory used for caching as well as "proper" flash memory.

Ordinary RAM chips embedded in the drive would do. All people are talikng about here is a massive extension of Level 2 cache and moving it from the motherboard to the hard drive.

There's nothing new here.
