Ann Baskins Surprise
This article lost its punch with the surprise resignation of the Secretrary of HP's Board and head legal counsel Ann Baskins, early this morning. That news is more significant than a CFO leaving a company. It implies that Baskins was expected by Hurd to lie to the House Committee about what was in or not in the board meeting minutes which are required by State law and, I believe the SEC.

Darby, the HP story up until the Baskins resignation was to new for radio or television, at least in the Seattle area. Of course those of us who have worked with or at HP have been following the story with horror appropriate for the October 19th Black Monday stock market drop of a few years ago.

Baskins is using lawyers who represented Enron, and Enron - unbeknown to many - was a technology firm very much involved in online trading and latter the distribution of films over fiber. Our interest in the HP Ann Baskins story involves being an IT professional and grows from experience with Enron.

IT workers were the private investigators involved in HP's identity theft and yesterday those workers started "shredding" the computers with pretexting software and data - This reported in the WSJ on September 25th.

I find it hard to believe that reporters and directors and employees of HP put documents with their social security numbers in the garbage. HP's personnel or payroll department is the likely source and we should assume that every ssn of anyone that currently or in the past worked at HP was on computers that have now been or is in the process of being shredded.

Hurd is going to have a hard time remaining at HP. Certainly he should give up directorship immediately. The same WSJ vocalizes an opinion that Sarb Ox goes to far in questioning the dual role of CEO and Director. But congress has a few agendas and doing away with SOX is likely not one of them.

Credit monitoring for HP current and former employees is called for. Hurd should be budgeting for that now.
