Building up the (1st) "C" in CISC
Adding things to hardware

1. Takes up chip "real estate".
2. Makes things run hotter.
3. Makes chips more proprietary.
4. Makes software less backward compatible.
5. Takes years for compilers to catch up with the new features.
6. Shows low confidence in their Itanium (EPIC) architecture plans - which aims to do more in SOFTWARE.

It's just not a good idea to unilaterally change the x86 core - as its complex enough already.
