A Deft Move...
I'm not sure this is entirely a "counter" to AMD's Torrenza, since the work on improving and further enhancing/extending PCI-E have went on for longer than AMD's Torrenza announcement.

Also, this exibits far more potential in the consumer space, for obvious reasons.

It looks like Intel and AMD are taking different approaches. AMD extending from CPU outwards while Intel works from the bus back towards the CPU. The AMD approach, while may seem more optimal, may have issues in adoption. Plugging extra chips to hypertransport is a case opportunistic usage, while plugging extra cards gives the advantage of working on a tried and true infrastructure.

It's interesting that AEGIA (not listed in the article I don't thing) is one of the partners. Even though the physics accelerator is a bit hyped at the moment, one can't deny that it'd be a good selling tool to the consumer/enthusiast market.
