Boost for VMs...
Even though most desktop software is still single threaded, there are still benefits from multi-core systems. I rarely have just a single app running at a time (and that's not even counting the background processes like antivirus software). Having the additional horsepower will also make using virutal machines more feasible (I like to do prototyping and testing beta software in a VM so I can contain any erratic behavior. It's also a good way to explore the less main stream areas of the web with some safety...). Of course, that also means needing more RAM, but that's a different story...
