This is interesting news. What is AMD cooking and with whom ?
http://www.opensparc.net/news/2006-09/the-register-ibms-power7-chip-going-into-opteron-motherboards.html

It appears that the core-2 has left some main players uninterested. IBM, SUN and Fuzitsu are preparing something BIG in my oppinion. The all plan to let AMD do the motherboards for them to save some good amount of change for them.

As a matter of fact, Intel had this comming for more than TEN YEARS. Their insistence in using the underpowered and overwhelemed FSB architecture driven EVERYBODY to their own chip-sets solutions, while AMD was improving its HT technology. It seems to me that IBM will lend their own R/D to AMD to further improve their HT technologies for the next generation, scalable high-end proc/memory interconnect.

SUN stands to benefit greatly from this as their Ultras had weak interconnects. With their new T1 and T2 processors lines they will be needing as much mem BW as they can get. HT to the rescue.

I hope that SUN and IBM will contribute to establish an "open interconnect" for the processor to memory interface. In this way, smaller outfits with little cash for R/D can focus on ONLY their processor technologies and not get overwhelmed by the cost to desing the entire proc+mem systems.

To me the future seems to lie with a HT ot HT-like processor to memory and PCI-express for memory to high-speed I/O and maybe Infiniband for the interconnection of the entire universe of I/O devices. We are getting there already.

It is strange that Intel is so sluggish in embracing better technologies. Their quad-core systems have already overwhelmed their new FSB.

They are working on fiber to silicon for inter-chip interconnects, so let's hope they wont botch this effort as they did with Itanium.
