Okay, I'll give it a go...
1. The CPU is your computer's/PC's/server's engine. Ya, ya, I know, alot of folks consider the CPU the "brains", but as a computer is a MACHINE, well, to me, ENGINE makes more sense.
More esoterically (and a bit oversimplified), programs from applications to operating systems are made up of "instructions" that are in turn executed by the CPU.

2. Before the days of hard drives, OS's were stored/kept on everything from punch paper-tape to mag tape(of the reel-to-reel variety) to, at the release of the "microcomputer" and CP/M in the mid-to-late 1970's, something known as "floppy disks", which were, I believe, 7 to 8 inch monstrosities in those days. And, often, the functional part of the OS was a more-or-less semi-permanent resident of the computers memory.
