The desktop and low to middle tier server market is stuck
with an obsolete ISA that was put together back in the 70's. Processors and architectures have moved on (as for instance the Power5 and 6 architectures) but these are too expensive for the desktop or low-end server market.

You can improve the steam engine from time to time but the day to move on to alternative more efficient technologies is overdue.

Intel missed the boat with Itanium-2 not because it is a bad processor or a bad idea. Intel executed it without all the parts in place, namely a transition strategy from IA32 to IA64. The overhead to switch over simply scared OEMs away who at the time were trying to avert risks and be conservative.

Let alone that Itanium-2 is but the FIRST step towards IA64. Intel simply refocused on the tried and proven IA32 especially after AMD showed them the right way.

This is how it works though: you snoze you lose. Intel snozed and after it woke up it panicked and took the turnaround for a U-turn.

Let's all of us have a moment of silence watching Intel move fast backwards...
