AMD did the high-quality work Intel should had done in the late 90's
IA64 is not perfect but it is a revolutionary step onwards passed the obsolete IA32. The fata flaws of Intel were:

1) Did not provide a reasonable upgrade path for system and application s/w from IE32 to IA64. The big semantic gap NEVER closed. These polarized OEMs and customers to "old and conservative" and "new and revolutionary". The uncertain times since late 90's have pretty much made the majority subscribe to the conservative approach.

2) IA64 did not move fast enough to capture the high-end. Intel waited for more than three full years to improve its Itanium-2, but in the meantime all hogh-end OEMs lost their faith on the vialbility of IA64 and dropped their support.

I am not blemming AMD ofcourse for "doing Intel's the work right", I am only contemplating the consequences of a third party doing right something that Intel should had already done SIX years ago. The downside is that we will have to live with the obsolete CISC ISA x86/64 for possibly another 7 to 10 years.

That is why I expressed the wish that AMD or someone with the right mantle will step up and provide a decent EXIT strategy from the war on ISA32..... happy
