There are two sides of the story
Any chip with a market name beginning with a "K" should be considered inferior. AMD didn't have anything that special back then. But when they came out with the Athlon, the market was slow to wake up and motherboard manufacturers didn't seem to exist for some reason or another.

Something about Intel holding them at gunpoint. AMD did respond though and continued to push the envelope of their chip until they released the Opteron and OEMs started listening.

You know this story though, you just refuse to see it as it is.
