Bait and Switch issue.
Sure, pretext methods to gather information seem rather innocuous on one level, after all; whats a little white lie in order to extract a little info that someone otherwise might consider to be otherwise private?

Despite the obvious moral implications of allowing such a practice to become an expected norm in society there are some very real world concerns about business communications if such an activity is not going to be restricted by law.

Make no mistake; big business and government are not so stupid as to not take steps to circumvent such a practice if it was allowed to become the norm. It already can be a pain interacting with the government and big business, how bad do you think it might get if such organizations felt compelled to take steps to avoid possible pretexting if it became a common lawful way to extract information that is supposed to remain confidential? The increased need for identification and release of pertinent information would soon become a nightmare for the lawful man on the street, and all because some people think pretexting is just fine.

For a long time society has frowned heavily on the general concept of 'bait and switch' which involves showing one thing and while something quite different is the actual reality. Buyer beware has become the common catch phrase used to indicate that consumers should be aware of this sales tactic. What we do not need in society is one more method of misleading people to get something out of them they don't want to give up. And to claim there is nothing wrong with it is absolute nonsense.
