- Yellow Journalism vs Advertisement vs Pay for Content
-
Finding a traitor is a good thing. Dunn and Hurd and those enabling the behaviour could well be traitors. HP may be based in the US but it is an international firm with at least some investors that care little about the USA, perhaps even some that would like to see the country destroyed, or their man made president (now see how important this all is).
The US founders did not think well of unreasonable search. Every graduate of a US accredited college knows this. Who else do those IT private investigators work for? Alcida perhaps? The good fellows that mob style killed Preston Gates and Ellis's client, the sandwich man involved in the wire fraud Abramoff is convicted of?
If nothing else this story is emphasising the need for verification that IT workers in the US uphold the values of the nation, regardless as to their employment in a private or government organization. It is assumed that corporate officers and directors do. That assumption needs review. Dunn and Hurd really are traitors when viewed by standards of the founders. (USA founders and I suppose HP founders as well).
The Yellow Journelism comment deflects that point and confuses what Zdnet is doing with what advertisors do. When advertisements are published with an underlying motive, regardless of the actual facts, you do not have "Yellow Journalism." You may have an action if the advertisment disparages a competitor, but advertisments are understood to be what they are. To gain advertisers, editors may favor journalists that hold the interests of the advertisors in mind. Paying for content to journalists is to be watched for. I understand that the difference between a journalist and a talk show host is that talk show hosts ethically can be paid for content. Perhaps we need a standard requiring a statement to that effect prior to a talk show that accepts such payment. Perhaps the same applies to bloggers.
For the record, I am not paid to post. How about others?
