Difference between Celebrity vs. Business Journalism
Your point that HP needed to plug the leaks may be right on -- however, the means it took were both sickening and illegal.

There is quite a difference between business journalism and the celebrity journalism you allude to above, with Tiger Woods' wife. I know some of the journalists involved -- and work with others every day -- and they check their facts, they work hard, and 95% of them have incredible integrity. There was, and is, no reason to cross this line into their personal lives and look at them as though they were criminals. They for the most part were just doing their jobs, as were most HP employees. HP's Board (and probably any other boards that are considering doing the same thing) just need to say -- okay, we crossed a line. We were wrong. And maybe pay a price for that.
