Are we really surprised...?
I apologize to citizens of the blogworld who like me can't get enough of this case because there I made a very similar post on CNet earlier, but anyway...

Are we really surprised to hear Hurd was involved in this ethical breakdown? As you said, it is very unlikely the a CEO would be bypassed in this sort of situation, and if he was, it is his responsibility to "supervise his managerial colleagues" (well said).

As I mentioned in my previous blog, I am simply struck by the fact that a computer tech firm as large as H-P would not employ better security on e-mails with this calibur of information. People need to be aware of the lack of privacy of an e-mail in our net based world. http://www.essentialsecurity.com/security_basics.htm
