It will surprise you, but I generally agree
There are really 2 issues.

1) Should Hp be entitled to push back against reporters to find leaks

2) Should pretexting be allowed in any context

For issue 1, I suspect most people would side with HP.

For issue 2, you raise all sorts of privacy concerns and use examples where the tactics that HP used are also used in everyday life. I agree with your examples, but I have a problem with them.

If pretexted information can be used to haul someone into court to force a debt to be collected, why should the standard for HP be different?

When the day comes that judges throw out cases because the circumstances were tainted by pretexting, then I'll urge people to sue HP. Until then, we as a society set the standard of behavior. Unfortunately, it isn't very high right now and if you're the spouse of an executive that is doing something questionable (and you know about it)... where are your morals and ethics to tell him/her to stop what you are doing because it's wrong? Ethics is two way street and those spouses (my cynical view) are too caught up in enjoying their perks to get my sympathy just because someone got their phone records.
