Means Vs Ends
Today's SITBO show out of Seattle pointed out that some cheating MBA students rationalized the behavior not just with - well everyone cheats - but also with the notion that it didn't matter because they didn't need feedback from grades because they already knew they were smart.

Throughout Bill Gate's career, there have been authors printing the notion that young Gates was caught not only cheating but stealing from the US government who had placed a PDP 1170 computer at Harvard to help with the Vietnam war effort.

Gates, in spite of being informed that only Harvard students were to have access to the PDP 1170, gave that access to Paul Allen who I now think of as Gate's coach or tutor. The authors postulate that the BASIC product that made Microsoft viable as a business really belonged to the US Governement because US Government computer time was stollen to make it. Allen himself believed the BASIC product may have belonged to Honeywell because he had been employed by Honeywell during the time he helped young Gates. There is a nice story there for another time.

In hindsite - the failure of Gates to obtain a degree from Harvard should have been viewed in the traditional way. That being that the kid had done something terribly wrong or unethical that could not be undone even with family wealth (think Tallented Mr. Ripply) and that it was in his nature to continue doing wrong under the notion that anything goes if eventually you have a Foundation that might do some good.
