Orange County is a show the young in my home watched last year and there was an episode where Man of The Year was given to an unethical businessman who later dies broke. The daugher of this man's husband takes over what is left of the business, all its liabilites etc, and the next year is to be awarded Man of The Year.

Only to make the business successful ,the son-in-law engaged in some qustionable deals, similar to those he disliked his father-in-law for. Instead of taking the award he uses the award banquet to expose the wrong-doing and turns over evidence to the police. Later he decides to become a city prosecutor, and work to make the world better. Warm Fuzzy's and something you could have your children watch. Also an indication of a sea change in California business practices.

Seattle's SITBO show pointed out today a study that MBA students are more likely to cheat than other students. The rational given by students involved fairness. If one student was known to be getting away with cheating it was rationalized that to-keep-a-level-playing-field, all students should cheat.

I am proposing that the awards Dunn recieved throughout her career, like those of Bill Gates, were purchased, arranged for, traded for, and influence peddled. Often charities are involved but they need not be.

If talent were necessary to rise to the top in a family business then we wouldn't see as much nepotism. We also would not see 50% of the applicants from families who donated large sums to Harvard accepted when the average overall acceptance rate is less than 8%. Harvard by the way may see this as a diversity goal. Is it fair that only smart kids get to go to college?

Geting back to cheating in school. My dad once took on a nun who in-spite of 98 out of 100 or better on all tests gave me a C. He was informed that grades at this private school were intended to encourage students to work beyond their potential and that I was a tallented mathematician. I changed schools the next year and was awarded smartest kid of a class of 1000 by the Lions Club on recomendation of my new teachers. Berkeley High, what a place:>)

Here is my point. Cheating is not just by individuals. It is institutionalized. Harvard admission policies are cheating because your family can purchase your admission. My private school supposedly graded on a curve. Yet after being confronted the nun informed my dad that grades were ment for encouragement. I felt cheated because I was looking for feedback. As far as I knew every kid was getting 98 to 100. The truth is powerful. It is also strange.

Martha Stewart went to jail to eductate folks like Dunn, to be an example for folks like Dunn, and yet no lesson was learned. For the good of polite society Dunn and likely her boy Hurd need a lesson. Lets as IT professionals encourage jail time at least twice that of Matha's. She is not an example we want for our children and her acceptance of this award is just so wrong.
