What about thier software that runs on Linux
IBM is making good cash of hardware and services but they make money on their DB software too for example.

If you want to write purely Open Source software and give it away while trying to make a buck of it of course you won't make cash. But you take Open Source software and build on to optimize you Proprietary software then you will make money. Think of it like this. Oracle can change Windows to make it's RDBM server run better but they can Change Linux to do that.
