How about Oracle and IBM
Seems to me they are very profitable with Open Source.

It's just an OS and all needs to do is run the must have proprietary software to make it profitable.

Your Free software to run on Linux will be great too for the software the 99% of the world needs. All other software it will be second best and in need of tweeking to make it shine.

So right now all Linux needs a reason for people to use it. Basically Microsoft has to screw up either big time are bunch of little issues. Security being one little issue, not enough on it's own but piled with other issues like software rental and DRM could be enough. May or may not happen.
