First off, you wrote:
With a home market of nearly 1 billion people and another 2 billion very near by, the Indians don't need approval from US buyers for this to be successful.
As the article notes:
But the ambitions of the device's makers don't stop at the country's borders. "We have taken the first steps of an Indian product company building a global brand," V. Vinay, chairman of PicoPeta, said in a statement.
'[G]lobal' doesn't mean local or even near neighbor. Their stated definition of success requires at least some 'approval from US buyers'.
Continuing to work backwards, you wrote:
... who mouthed the axiom that open source software can't be profitable?
Name a profitable company built on open source. Don't include RedHat. They're not always profitable, and they're concentrating on their proprietary offerings to corporations. Proprietary is how to be profitable; hope they can get proprietary enough fast enough.
And before that you wrote:
Where does it say that all the applications built on top of the Linux-based OS must be open source?
I didn't say that. I did say that writing (proprietary) apps. for Windows gives Indian programmers access to a world of possible buyers, and that they were talented enough to use that access to make substantial profits.
Please argue with me, not that scarecrow over there.
And finally firstly you wrote:
Where in the article did it say the purpose of the Simputer was "to build a hugely profitable software industry"?
Considering the Simputer is being sold as a device, there's not much chance to make a hugely profitable software industry out of it. You're really wailing the straw out of the scarecrow.
I opened up my discussion a bit further to try to see how India was most likely to advance its software industry. Change of topic.
Actually, sorry I confused you. - Posted by: Anton Philidor Posted on: 03/29/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
