apparently the core-2 didn't impress them much....
the "little secret" is that IBM is doing the chips for AMD.... and those familiar with processor architecture, cannot miss some similarities in the processor/memory i/f: mem conotroller and multi-port bus fabrics are present on both Power4/5 and Opteron.

IBM is touroughly familiar with the + and - of their architecture and the fact that they decided to combine Opteron and Cell means that there are several good elements in Opteron that make it a desirable platform to carry the x86_64 load.

Apparently, IBM want to play both ways: x86_64 ISA and Cell/PPC.

Why they didn't like the core-2? Too late or just Intel-avert happy ?
