Because they're behind the curve...
You can't compare the price of an mp3 player with a flash card because mp3 players have a much longer cycle from factory to shelf. For a fair price comparison you need to compare an mp3 player with the price of flash cards six months ago.

I think mp3 players should come without any memory at all. Let me buy a flash card....

In the long run they'd make more money because I'd be tempted to change player more often if they cost $20 instead of $120.
