- How long is "the long run"?
-
A high end MP3 player may have a relatively high initial cost, but the rechargeable battery in say, an iPod, saves you a lot of money over the long run.
I think you make a good point about the cost of use, and the unit I have can run through a AAA battery in an hour or two if I'm using it in the car via the tape deck (have to crank the volume up for thi to work). But even so I don't drive a great deal and overall I'm not buying lots of batteries. Perhaps over a few years I might spend the extra money, but there is a difference between "pay as you go" and "pay upfront". If I'm buying lots of batteries, I must be enjoying the player a lot and the unit must not have become obsolete yet. So there is a sort of risk factor built in.
Overall I agree though that a player with a rechargeable battery would be much better. However, I can't find one that uses SD cards instead of built in memory or a hard drive. Also, I don't think the premiums MP3 players command today will hold out for more than a year or two, so all this player has to do is get me through the remaining expensive period. Also, even a $400 ipod bought today would seem like very old tech in 2 or 3 years (assuming it still works). This kind of tech doesn't make a good long term investment. - Posted by: enduser_z Posted on: 09/02/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
