Microsoft's fault.
All of the programs I was describing were Microsoft programs.

For example, compare SQL Server Administrator and Query
Analyzer. Not only are they both Microsoft programs; they're
part of the same package.

First of all, why are these two separate applications? I use a
third-party program for other SQL database servers, and it
includes all the features of these two programs in one!

Second, why is it that I have to log in to every server I want to
access in Query Analyzer, but SQL Server Administrator does it
automatically?

Third, well, I won't go into how extremely different the two user
interfaces are. Just take a look. It's unbelievable. They must have
bought these programs from two different companies and never
did anything to standardize them, and the editor in Query
Analyzer is just horrible. Why can't they just develop one decent
text engine and implement it everywhere? Object-oriented
architecture anyone?

The problem I mentioned about the "Refresh" command
sometimes not appearing on the menu appears in a mutitude of
different Microsoft programs, and the "logic" behind how "right-
click" menus are implemented generally is very inconsistent and
buggy across all the Microsoft programs I've used. The same
goes for the Windowing conventions (or lack thereof). Compare,
for example, Query analyzer, Access, Excel and other office
programs, and Internet Explorer.

Maybe you're simply accustomed to the lack of standardization
in their user interface conventions, but it really annoys the crap
out of me, and it makes it nearly impossible to learn, and this
isn't the only area where Microsoft is inconsistent. Have you ever
tried to learn VBScript? It's impossible to remember how to use
all the different functions because they're all different. There's
no consistency in the order of parameters in functions that are
otherwise similar, names are cryptic and arbitrary, and almost
everything is a freakin' function! You can create an array with the
aaray function, but it's not an object! Instead of Array.length,
you've got to pass your array variable into yet another function
called Ubound--like that's an easy name to remember. Not only
that, arrays are zero based, i.e. the first element in an array is
element 0, but practically everything else is 1-based. The first
character in a string is character 1!!! It's like this language was
developed by a bunch of different part-time programmers who
never even talked to each other!

All this inconsistency really steepens the learning curve, and it
absolutely KILLS productivity, especially if you're the type of
person who uses upwards of a dozen different programs a day.

Microsoft's programs just plain suck. It's hard to believe they do
this for a living.
