I believe I read somewhere that Core 2 Duo
CPUs can be placed on the same otherboard as
Core Duo. I'm not sure if this refers to
laptops as well as desktops, but I've seen
some BYO white box laptops which claim this
feature.

If that is correct, if you need a PC today, you may not have to wait for the inventory pipeline to ramp up on Core 2 Duo SKUs. Find your best deal
on a Core Duo today, get a Core 2 Duo CPU
at a good price (perhaps 3-6 months from now),
and drop it in.
