double check your hp to make sure it doesn't have a similar technology. hate to break it to you, but lexmark isn't the only one that does this. epson does it on most their printers, hp does it on a few, lexmark does it on a few. i'm not sure about canon.

basically, most printer manufacturers do this on part of their product line. i actually got rid of my epson recently specifically because of this. i'm currently trying to research which printers do or do not employ this type of technology (not an easy task.) i'm currenlty actually looking at the lexmark all-in-ones (x1150). as far as i can tell, this printer doesn't have this crud built in, but again, i can't tell for sure. anyone out there know?
