Cutting the Cashe is a Crazy Compromise
Intel spent unbelievable "Bucks" to become a 300mm house. Cutting the cashe is probably more of a reaction to trying to keep the package in a current package outline rather than trying to limit the silicon to reduce the die-size. Another "wounded-Intel" decision.
