some ideas (hybrid maganetic/flash drives, built in usb or firewire, etc)
Combine flash and magnetic, and use the combination to get the best of both speed and storage size. Add built in data integrity auto-striping and repairing, auto-defragmentation, built in drive utilities, built in usb port, and optional drive level data encryption or compression.

We have all these things now, in separate form.
Why not focus on improving all aspects of drive usage, and make them more reliable?

Large Primary Cache
Large Flash Data Partition/Cache for holding more frequently accessed data, os bits, and buffering data read writes.
Large magnetic storage area for less frequently accessed data.
All data is striped and protected by the drive, if possible defragmentation happens intelligently in the background.

Each drive should provide its own bios like interface containing utilities to upgrade firmware, diagnose, repair, partition, format, securely erase, the drive without any third party software.

If i was a drive manufacturer I'd also consider adding a usb port/controller directly to the drive so a usb cable is all you need to get your data off or to prep a drive. or firewire, etc.
