speed is the issue
Storage is important, but the reason flash drives will eventually replace HDD in laptops is because of the speed and data safety issues.

First speed. Make flash drive fast enough, and laptops can radically alter their design. Once they get as fast or faster than HDD, then HDD in the mobile world is finished.

Another issue is data safety. Flash won't have the issues of head crash in case of vibration or shock. Fewer moving parts, means longer battery life, too.

For sheer storage space, HDD will probably always be king, at least for the next ten years. But for mobility, it won't take flash drives long to take over.
