Telephony is the Computer
Long before the network was the computer, AT&T was creating Unix (the precursor to Linux) which was written in the C language and the C language was developed for Unix. The separation of voice processing and data processing has always been an artificial one. In fact AT&T produced its own personal computer for a while.

When AT&T was split up owing to monopoly charges it had used monopoly power to slow down innovations in telephony and computing. This is the nature of monopolies and Elliot Spitser during a Microsoft antitrust case drew from the AT&T anti-innovation theam in his statements to the press regarding Microsoft which has done the same.

Today's multi-core technology has taken computing to were we want to go today in desktop and handheld computing. We have the open source movement and laws preventing anti-innovation monopolies as well as other governement innititives, such as the Internet, to thank for that. There would be no multi processor multi core technology in computing devices for the masses today if Microsoft had been successful in influencing Intel to further delay this 10 year old proven-on-mainframe innovation. Huzzah. Are not thos multi duo inside advertisements fine? They are especially fine for Java which was built 10 years ago specifically for that technology and "small appliances".
