Though I agree with you that this is silly, and just Apple's lawyers earning some extra cash....
---It was mentioned that Microsoft Protected "Windows" but that was limited to computer lingo and software I believe. Apple is going after a Vending machine company.---
Well, Apple seems to be going after electronic devices and computer accessories. The big difference with MS is that computer companies were already using the generic term "windows" before MS did. With Apple, it's not like everyone called a handheld electronic device a "blank-pod" before Apple did.
Also note that MS sued "MikeRoweSoft.com" a few years back. And Google is going after anyone who uses the word "google" as a verb. And Visa has gone after eVisa.com who offer travel visas, not credit cards. Companies are just stupid about their trademarks, explained well here:
