Actually, they already have a word to differentiate optical drives...
The term "disc" with a "c" on the end refers to optical media (as in "Compact Disc" or "Laser Disc") but magnetic, rotating platter based storage is called "disk" (as in "floppy disk" or "hard disk" or "ZIP disk") so it is not that the term refers to floppies, but rather to the type of recording/reading material and method.
