Maybe time to stop calling them HARD drives
Really, the only reason disk drives are called HARD drives was the need to contrast them with floppy disk drives. The original floppy disks did indeed flop, physically, in their flexible disk sleeve. In a manner of speaking, they are "flopping" now, even though 3 1/2 disks have a rigid case. Many people with floppy drives only use them to load driver disks or to do an emergency boot, and may otherwise never use them for months or years at a time. The trend to have PCs with no floppy drive at all is increasing. Perhaps it's time to let go of the term "hard drive" for something more descriptive. IBM used to call them DASD's, or Direct Access Storage Devices, and informally called them "spindles". "Disk Drive" is a nice name, but CD/DVD drives are "disk" drives too, so it's not as unique a name as it used to be. Maybe someone can come with a good, descriptive name that no longer has reference to floppies, a medium that is more and more irrelevant each day.
