Irony.
I wonder if any of the people who lose their jobs because of a cheaper open source project use their suddenly free time to contribute to open source projects.
No. They probably realize what happened to them sufficiently well.

The logic in this statement was hard to follow:

"A lot of this software [open source] is just the common trade tools - on some projects development support is provided by other businesses who make their money customizing or configuring these products. Everyone's happy to chip in a little to support a project taht they otherwise don't have the resources to support."

If there are universally used "common trade tools" and other businesses make money customizing these tools, then a project which these companies do not have the resources to support must be very extensive.

If the companies are willing to invest even the time to complete the project, then there must be a market for the result of the extensive work.

If there's a market for what's no longer only "common trade tools", then there's a chance that, without open source, a company could have come into existence which met that need.

So your statement could apparent be rephrased, without changing your logic, to "open source prevents innovative companies from coming into existence by facilitating the cooperation of existing companies."

And, of course, if all the collaborators are selling the elaborate new product, none would be able to charge the price for it that would be available to the innovative company that was not permitted to come into existence.

So your statement proves that profits and jobs are prevented from coming into existence by open source. Though that seems obvious, it's not consistent with your apparent point. So I'm probably not following your logic.

Another question: Why would

"... large high-performance-computing companies ... [now] be struggling with 20-odd variations of UNIX."

Wouldn't they make some Unix their own?

And, as IBM's replacement of Linux with Unix (sorry, Mr. Murphy) confirms, there are things Linux cannot do. Why should Linux cause abandonment of Unix.

But the most obvious mistake is this statement:

"And the big thing is there would be absolutely no competition in the desktop OS and 'office apps' without Open Source."

There is, as you know, no significant competition now.

I'd say that the existence of the open source products will prevent large corporations from ever trying to produce such competition. Microsoft is protected.

Though that's not so bad. You have to approve when you read "Micorosoft is hiring." After all, that's what we want most from the software business, right?!
