huh?
As far as the CPUs go I see little difference between AMD and Intel. Wait... oh yeah, didn't Intel threaten us all with something they call "Secure Computing" - didn't they implement the "Paladin Core" for MS - and aren't they still planning to put in CPU features which, if activated, will prevent us from loading our system of choice onto a machine?

I really don't know what you're talking about when you say an install to an Intel machine just works - as opposed to what - my installs on AMD machines have also just worked. Only exception ever was my Opteron252 machine at home and that was because of a few installer bugs on the pure 64 system - if I had gone for 32-bit compatibility mode instead I wouldn't have had any problems.

For me the only disadvantage of AMD is that they have nowhere near the manufacturing capacity of Intel. If only a few major manufacturers would ask AMD to supply chips, AMD simply wouldn't be able to meet demand. Also, computers are so fast these days that AMD offers no obvious advantage to 'normal' users - but people like me who do scientific computing see a huge difference.

I would still recommend Intel chips on laptops - AMD still doesn't compete in terms of power consumption and "64 bit data/48-bit address" really mean nothing on a laptop. Now if AMD had a 64-bit FPU like the DEC Alphas that would be a different story...
