Intel aims for open-source graphics advantage

use the right tools ...

So long as you get your job done without hassles, use the free drivers. If you need 3D acceleration then pick a chip with open drivers or a chip with appropriate proprietary drivers - but don't waste your time using software rendering when you have a full-blown 3D accelerator. I think it's great that Intel is releasing these drivers - but I'm not switching to Intel any time soon because:
1. I really love my AMDs and I just don't see the MoBos shipped with Intel support chips.
2. No Intel chip has the features and performance of my NVidia GeForce6800 card.

BUT if I had to buy a laptop I know I now have 2 choices: one with an Intel graphics chip and free drivers or one with an NVidia chip and proprietary drivers. Why did you spend your money on a machine with an ATI chip? Their support is virtually non-existent - NVidia have much better Linux drivers. Don't support ATI until they fix their crappy attitude. Of course I'm not 100% happy with NVidia either - I wish they'd open their source code.
