from the very beginning? They have a vested interest in Linux, and this driver thing fits right in with their plans.
I never understood how open sourcing drivers would be giving away the company jewels. First off, the HARDWARE is proprietary and any calls to that hardware are platform-specific. IOW, open sourcing an API call to "make this operation fast" routine - that is implemented in hardware - would be "jewels".
