It makes a difference to me
I run Debian on both of my home computers. The
one I'm posting from has an motherboard with an
integrated ATI X200 chipset. I don't like
dealing with the proprietary drivers because you
have to recompile the kernel every time you
upgrade (which is often for me) and sometimes
there are weird glitches. Plus I like to keep my
system free from proprietary software, even if it
is freeware. I'm currently using the "ati"
driver that ships with X.org 7.0. Because this
is a relatively new chip, I can't even get a
framebuffer running. In fact, it took a lot of
tricks even to get it to run 1600x1200 resolution
with 24 bit color. Originally, with X.org 6.9, I
had to use the vesa driver. It's almost been
enough to make me consider installing the
proprietary drivers.

And then this announcement comes along. I've
always been a fan of AMD, but the Core
architecture has me considering buying from Intel
the next time I need a system. I prefer to use
the integrated graphics systems because I don't
need heavy 3D graphics so I don't want to pay
extra for them. But I would like to have 2D
acceleration, or a least a framebuffer! But the
only way I can get an integrated Intel chip is if
I buy a motherboard for an Intel processor. So
until ATI or NVIDIA hops onboard, I think Intel
just gained themselves a customer.

P.S. When you go to the website mentioned in the
article, it states that the 965 will
have "programmable vertex, geometry, and fragment
shaders." I almost wonder if Intel isn't trying
to position themselves to compete with ATI and
NVIDIA directly.
