Product in search of a market
At one point I was a supporter of Blu-Ray. Now I am starting to think that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are products in search of a market. I have worked professionally in technology and consumer electronics for over thirty years and both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD may be beating each other up for something the consumer has little or no interest in. Most consumers are not taking full advantage of the present DVD system. How many are using the various higher quality video outputs on the current DVD players, such as S-Video or RGB outputs? Most are still using the standard composite video (video out) on the DVD player or recorder. There is also a great deal of negative consumer feeling on the DRM aspects. Also the increasingly practical ability to download movies could also hamper interest in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Basic marketing issues are being ignored.
