Dell certainly helped by Apple's decision
to not work with 3rd party clone makers of its Mac systems, but to kill them off and retain an articifially constrained chain of supply and demand. Gateway in its stumble of growth, let Dell slip by and IBM priced its premium of warranty above that which the consumer market wanted to see. Compaq and HP gave a race for the money and marketshare, but alast, had proprietary crap issues that didn't seem to merge any better wither. Not being a boutique or DIY shop, Dell did well in the market it shaped. So how many mom and pop shops did you support?
