It just got REALLY interesting .. Now AMD and Intel have to compete based
on INNOVATIVE DESIGNs that make more efficient use of the silicon. AMD started this in order to manage to compete with Intel: they had to use more intelligent architecture in their data path and extend the ISA to fit the 64-bit requirements. And they did this very successfully: AMD was performance leader for almost THREE years now.

That FORCED Intel to go back to the drawing board and ACTUALLY USE THEIR BRAIN, instead of waiting the expected shrinking of the feature size to provide the standard benefits (i.e., Moore's law).

Now they AT LAST ! started some architcturally interesting line of processors with their core-2. And the multi-core came and the multi-chip modules ...

Now I am just waiting the next round of AMD cores (65nm, quad-core, DDR2, HTv3.0, ...)
