- Had AMD NOT been around doing its OWN THING
-
users would still be using NETBURB at 10GZh with their machines in the freezer for cooling ...
"What you see today leverages AMD Opteron technology and marries it with IBM's Enterprise X Architecture," Whitney said.
Opteron is a well established processor with very interesting proc to mem interconnect. This STILL is its main advantage; 3 HT ports for SMP and 1 for proc to mem communication. Even the latest Woodcrest does not fare so well in this respect. And worse, when the quad core Xeons come their FSBs are still the bottleneck. Intel nneds to keep improving these parts which are not so well designed.
``Woodcrest in waiting Intel is fighting back with its "Woodcrest" Xeon 5100 family for dual-processor servers, which improve performance while reducing power consumption. But it still has a long way to go: Its forthcoming "Tulsa" Xeon for four-processor machines still is based on the discredited and power-hungry NetBurst architecture.''
Still long way to go. They did something nice their dual core/sual socket systrems but (as usual) Intel chokes up when more sockets are in place. AMD already had the advantage in this area.
And we have NOT seen the next AMD's designs with HTV30 and DDR2 / FB DRAM.
NOW IS getting interesting, and as I have said before, had tiny AMD not doing its "own thing" with the design of their AMD_64 we would still be living with the crappy NETBURB runnign at 10GHz and with 62 stages ....
Competition IS GOOD. Only complainers are people who have tied up their income with the OLDER technologies and now are watching the $$$ train pull out from the station ..... - Posted by: michael_t Posted on: 08/01/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
