True, and Apple has never indicated any thought of licensing it to them, even if they wanted it.

Because it's not in MS' interests to do so. If it was, all of the Plays For Sure players would support it. MS is pushing WMA as a standard for all audio files. They will benefit mightily if everyone adopts that as the main file type for digital music, as every electronics manufacturer will have to license it from them. Why support another competing format that you have to pay for and can't profit from? The only reason they support mp3 is because it's the de facto standard, and any player that doesn't play mp3 files doesn't stand a hope in hell of selling (see Sony's ATRAC-only player fiasco).

I'm assuming software to use the Zune and the Zune store will be Windows-only, so regardless of file format, I won't be buying any time soon.
