But how does OEM lock in occur?
If MS wasn't the best, why would OEMs care if they are being locked out? They would just go with the best and let capitalism correct the situation. I don't say that to excuse the practice, but it's true.

You can argue that MS wasn't the best on technical merits, but MS was certainly what most customers wanted. That makes them the best in the ways that customers care about.
