But not everybody upgrades on each cycle
If they concentrated on making each version of Office and Windows so much better than the previous that people would be knocking down walls to buy the next version, rather than simply be satisfied with what they have, their margins would increase. Imagine if all the people who still run Office 97 also upgraded to Office 2000, XP, 2003, and now 2007. MS would have increased their income four-fold from that group alone. That alone would increase their profitability more than XBox and Zune combined (especially considering the fact that neither of those has turned any profit yet).
