mr dave, Intel copied the PowerPC datapath in their
PIII line (as they do share the advanced pipe stages) and then they came out with the infamous netburst asinine architecture that moved the # of stages to 31 MAX.

The NetBurst internally converts the CISC IA32 instructions to RISC micro-ops and executes them as if they were in a RISC processor. An explicit admission that CISC is dead and it can get sped up AND pipelined successfully ONLY WHEN converted internally to RISC. micro-ops are also stored internally in the "stream I-cache".

These are the tech "wonders" that came out Intel's "brains"... wink

And then HP came along and leveraged their know how in RISCs, their R/D and the same they inherited from DEC and the Alpha.

But that was NOT enough for Intel and when the Itanium-1 came out (McKinley) its performance was more deplorable than the THEN P4.... Pathetic to say the least.

Then HP takes over the IA^$ implementation and SAVE the day with the Itanium-2. But then Intel AGAIN SCREWS UP BIG TIME because it LET Itanium-2 out to DRY for THREE years in which time the IBM Power just kept improving and now the high-end servers and HPC are almost completely turned off by IA64. Even Montecito is not up to par with Power5 and the soon to come out Power6.

So what Intel "accomplieshed" was to alienate its HIGH END users and OEMs (one of them also went bankrupt) and started ONLY successfully immitating AMD with its better designed x86_64.

But If Intel can do so little while AMD so much, it ONLY means how "confused" and ineffective the various groups are in Intel....

That's why I don't feel that Intel did soemthing "amazing" or wondrous.

take care mr dave
