the hard drive is the bottleneck of a system.

Also hardware by its nature has to be more advanced than software, so the software has some catching up to do, but that usually happens soon enough. Whereas a hard drive of today would still be the biggest bottleneck of a computer with the processor/mobo/memory of a five year old computer.

You know what would be an inteserting test? Take a five year old computer with 512 MB memory (all parts must be vintage 2001 parts) and a brand new computer with 512 MB memory and swap the hard drives and hard drive controllers and start doing the benchmarks. I'll bet the old computer with the new hard drive wins on the most common day to day tasks.
