Desire vs. Needs
People will DESIRE Vista. Aside from a few gamers (the ones who buy $400 graphics cards and swap out their motherboard every year) and other performance freaks, people won't DESIRE a Core 2. Whether they really NEED either Vista or Core 2 is, as you pointed out, not particularly important.
